As with sample preparation on small parcels of ore for bench scale test work, bulk sample preparation of parcels in the realms of many tonnes to hundreds of tonnes needs to be done correctly to avoid compromising the entire downstream testwork program. Larger sample parcels, however, present a different set of challenges and require a larger range of equipment with the procedures to suit. ALS takes great pride in its bulk sample preparation capability in line with our ISO 9001 quality accreditation. We have tackled almost every conceivable preparation and blending scenario in our long history, so clients can be confident their testwork will get off to a good start.
Bulk sample preparation essentially comes down to crushing and screening to a target
crush size (in mm), followed by blending. However, when considering sample representivity
and achieving high degrees of heterogeneity in the ore parcels, there can be a lot more than
meets the eye at first. Especially in comparison to small parcel preparation, or conversely,
industrial preparation on mine sites.
In terms of crushing and screening, ALS has a dedicated bulk crushing room centered around a
double decked 1m x 2m vibrating screen whereby the screen mesh aperture panels can be
changed to suit the target crush size. Product from the screen gravitates onto a conveyor to
discharge into an adjacent blending room. Every crushing circuit is different commensurate with
the ore, and as such, crushing circuits are arranged around the vibrating screen using a series
of mobile crushers (Jaw, Cone and Rolls) of various sizes, with materials transport facilitated by
mobile Sanki conveyors of various dimensions and belt types (smooth and chevron).
Crushing and Screening: The material type, characteristics and mass will predicate the circuit
set-up, as follows:
ALS has access to a full range of equipment and can also leverage of vendors for larger scale testwork.
No problem. Please contact us for further details.
Generally, no. Our procedures are geared towards representative controlled crushing and sub-sampling and are more expensive as a result
No. Local council regulations prohibit this for environmental reasons (i.e. dust plumes).
This depends on the characteristics and deportment of the value mineral in the host (gangue) material. For example, coarse free gold in a Cu-Au ore may require an extra level of blending to give the gold particle every opportunity to distribute evenly into every sub-container. Conversely, rotary blending or Bobcat blending of a pervasive percentage grade mineralization maybe entirely sufficient as the mineral follows the mass distribution.
Generally, 100t can be processed at one time and this usually more than suffices for most pilot plants. Greater masses would need to be processed in batches.
No compositing program is too complex for ALS. The only limitations are time, resources and budget.
Generally, yes. ALS has facilities and procedures to treat fibrous and radioactive samples. Surcharges do apply, however, to cover safety equipment, monitoring and decontamination.:
ALS is a quarantine approved premises and treats many samples of oversea origin. Strict regulatory requirements are in needed around packaging and paperwork, however. ALS can advise you on these requirements.
Generally, no. Insurance and safety protocols typically prevent renting laboratory space and this is not part of ALS’s business model. Clients are able to visit and witness testwork but this is to observe only. Typically, clients may attend on 24/7 piloting campaigns and interact with senior staff members for technical and operational issues.
Yes, clients are always welcome to visit our facilities and observe samples or tests in progress. Inductions are required and other rules may apply to visitors.
Yes, if a testwork program is in progress, ALS will happily dispatch testwork products and feed samples to vendors, third party laboratories, and customers as required. Fees apply.
No, as it is not our core business and would put us in direct competition with many of our clients. We can, however, put you in contact with a range of reputable engineering providers and consultants.
Bulk sample preparation always precedes other processes, both at bench scale and pilot scale that may include:
