A spotlight on psychosocial safety

ALS is committed to creating mentally healthy, inclusive, respectful, and safe workplaces where our people thrive and achieve their best. An important part of this is working together to proactively minimize psychosocial hazards and create healthy work environments and cultures.

A mentally healthy workplace is one that minimises risks to psychological health and safety by identifying and assessing psychosocial hazards; builds the knowledge, skills, and capabilities of workers to be resilient and thrive at work; supports the recovery of workers returning after a physical or psychological injury; and provides a respectful environment, free of stigma and discrimination.

Celebrating our people’s passion for sustainability

ALS sustainability photo competition

To celebrate the passion of our employees in helping us achieve our sustainability goals, this year ALS held a photo competition that revealed how our people connect their personal passions to our sustainability pillars of people, planet and community. The winners and finalists featured throughout this report impressed us with their visual and social impact, meaningful storytelling, and creativity. They stand as vivid examples of how our employees take ALS’ sustainability goals personally and aim to make their lives a powerful force for positive change.

Planet

Central to our company's vision is making the world a better place. This vision drives our commitment to operate our businesses with environmentally sustainable outcomes. Aware of the complexity and interconnectedness of the world environment, we continually review our operations and seek opportunities to conserve resources, reduce waste, minimise our impact on the communities where we operate, and work to achieve our net zero emission goals.

In support of these goals, generating positive momentum for change requires action across all levels of our company. From global to regional and site-specific initiatives, our businesses are empowered to deliver innovative solutions to complex carbon reduction challenges.

Renewable energy

An important part of ALS' strategy to reduce our 2030 Scope 1 and 2 emissions is the installation of solar photovoltaics (PV). Between FY22 and FY24, our solar PV capacity increased substantially from a single 99kWp system in Brisbane, to 25 ALS-owned systems installed at our sites around the world.

The incorporation of solar power and other renewable energy sources into building design and construction is a key component of ALS’ sustainable building practices, guided by ALS’ Building Standard. An important enabler of our emissions reduction targets, this standard assists our global team in integrating consideration of climate, energy intensity and cost, and water availability into final designs.

Community

Our business and sustainability successes are linked to the diverse communities we serve and in which we operate. To make a meaningful and lasting positive impact by delivering tangible and sustainable economic, social and environmental benefits, our community efforts include targeted financial support, corporate and regional initiatives and development contributions. An important part of our implementation of these efforts is fostering long-term partnerships with community groups and organisations, working collaboratively to achieve shared goals and create positive change.

In FY24, ALS continued a prudent approach to capital management, achieving strong underlying shareholder returns, proving the strength of our business model and management team. We have made significant progress towards our FY27 financial objectives with continued growth, cementing ALS as a market leader in the testing industry.

We also recognise that what we achieve is as important as how we achieve it. Through our Code of Conduct and guidance from leadership, we promote and encourage consistent ethical behaviour to create a strong culture anchored in honesty, transparency and accountability.
